At it's most basic, the handbag is utilitarian, a vessel for our day-to-day necessities, a way to carry things from here to there. But in the world of fashion and in the larger world of women, bags are a symbol, a statement, a rite of passage, and quite often, an obsession. For many of us, our first "grown-up" bag represented a major milestone in our "style-lives": a leather tote or logo-emblazoned hobo that changed our way of dressing and sparked our interest in fashion. We eventually became familiar with the status symbols; the Hermes Birkin bag, unbuckled, dangling from the crook of an elbow; the Chanel 2.55 lipstick in red with shiny gold hardware; the elaborate set of Louis Vuitton luggage. When one accessory has so much cache, it's hard not to keep adding new samples to your closet.
